How to Read a Tallow Balm Ingredient List

A balm’s ingredient list is a useful place to begin your next skincare purchase. It lets you see the whole blend, recognise familiar oils behind botanical names and check details that matter to you. With MODII, those details lead to three inviting choices: a soft whipped balm, a firm solid balm and a solid formula with lavender oil.
Here is how to read a tallow balm ingredient list, using the wording on our current product pages. Keep the packaging for your chosen product and size handy, too.
Start with the product and size
Find the product name, net quantity, ingredients, directions and precautions. Health Canada’s guide to cosmetic labels explains how these details help you choose and use a cosmetic.
MODII Whipped Tallow Balm comes in a 120g jar. Solid Tallow Balm and Lavender Tallow Balm each offer 60g and 120g options. Checking the size matters: individual packaging can carry different wording or precautions.
Get to know the ingredient names
Cosmetic labels use a shared naming system called INCI, short for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. Botanical names can identify the plant and, in a full ingredient name, the part used. The familiar name in brackets makes the list easier to follow. Health Canada’s ingredient-labelling guide explains this system.
A worked example Whipped Tallow Balm 120g
Our Whipped Tallow Balm ingredient list reads:
Beef Tallow, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Mel (Honey).
Read it one ingredient at a time:
- Beef Tallow: the animal-derived tallow in this blend
- Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil: olive oil; “fruit” identifies the plant part
- Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil: sweet almond oil
- Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil: jojoba oil from the seed
- Mel (Honey): honey
That is five listed ingredients. “Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil” is one ingredient expressed with botanical and familiar wording. Learning that pattern makes the next label easier to read.

Notice what changes between formulas
Once you recognise the names, you can compare recipes quickly.
The Solid Tallow Balm listing reads:
Tallow, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Mel (Honey).
Cera Alba means beeswax. Here it appears alongside tallow, olive oil and honey, rather than the sweet almond and jojoba oils listed in Whipped Balm.
The Lavender Tallow Balm listing reads:
Beef Tallow, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Honey, Lavandula Angustifolia Oil.
Lavandula Angustifolia Oil identifies the lavender oil. The product page notes that the 120g packaging describes its honey as raw honey. Follow the wording on your selected size.
For shopping, these differences give you a clear starting point: Whipped for a soft scoop, Solid for a firm balm, or Lavender for a solid format with lavender oil. Our whipped-versus-solid guide explores texture in more detail.
Understand ingredient order
Under Canadian cosmetic-labelling guidance, ingredients are generally listed from higher to lower concentration by weight. Ingredients present at 1% or less may appear in any order after those above 1%; separate rules also apply to fragrance and colouring ingredients. Health Canada, sections 8.3.3–8.3.7
Tallow appears first in all three MODII lists above. The lists do not disclose percentages, so a position cannot tell you an exact amount, where the 1% threshold falls or how a product will perform on your skin.
The complete blend shapes the experience. In a 2021 lotion-bar study, researchers varied tallow, shea butter and beeswax and assessed properties including hardness. This illustrates why the whole recipe matters when considering texture; the study did not test MODII products.
Read the directions beside the ingredients
The next useful detail is how to apply your chosen balm.
- Whipped Balm: apply a small amount with fingertips to freshly cleansed and toned face, neck and décolleté, avoiding the eyes
- Solid and Lavender Balms: warm a small amount between fingertips, then massage into clean, dry skin, focusing on the face, neck and décolleté and avoiding the eyes
Check every ingredient against known allergies, including sweet almond oil in Whipped Balm and bee-derived ingredients across these formulas. Lavender Balm contains lavender essential oil. Seek professional advice first for sensitive skin, known allergies or a skin condition. Patch test before wider use; a small-area test does not establish allergy safety. The 60g Solid Balm label advises against use during pregnancy.
Use externally, stop if irritation or redness develops, and follow your jar’s full precautions. Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and out of children’s reach. Our ingredient guide’s care notes and the AAD’s product-testing guidance offer more detail.
