Tallow soap vs tallow balm: rinse-off and leave-on care
Learn how rinse-off tallow soap and leave-on tallow balm fit into your routine. Compare MODII formats, ingredients, sizes and directions before you choose.

THE ROUTINE EDIT
A bar by the sink. A jar for your moisturizing step. Tallow soap and tallow balm each have a place in an everyday routine, and knowing when to rinse and when to leave a product on makes choosing simpler.
Start with the step you are shopping for: explore MODII tallow soap for cleansing, or browse our tallow balms for a rich moisturizing texture.
Why the same ingredient can have two roles
Traditional soap is made by reacting fats or oils with an alkali. That reaction, called saponification, produces soap. The FDA’s explanation of traditional soapmaking describes this change from starting fats and oils to a cleansing product.
Soap’s cleansing ingredients help loosen oily dirt so it can be rinsed away with water. A balm is formulated for application after cleansing and remains on the skin. The practical sequence is easy to remember: cleanse, rinse, then moisturize. DermNet’s cleanser guide explains how cleansing ingredients work.
For balms, the appeal is the finished moisturizing formula and its feel. Dermatologist guidance from MD Anderson identifies moisturizing and softening as tallow’s skincare uses. MODII offers that rich balm experience in two distinct textures, with clearly listed recipes to help you choose.

Choose the product for the step you need
For a bar-cleansing routine: Handmade Tallow Soap
MODII Natural Handmade Tallow Soap comes in a single-bar option or a two-bar pack. Each bar is 120g. Choose one to begin with, or two if you want a spare for another sink or shower.
The current product listing includes beef tallow, coconut oil, olive oil, palm oil, shea butter, jojoba oil, avocado oil and vegetable oil. Check the full soap ingredient list and precautions, and follow the label on the bar you receive.

For a soft scoop: Whipped Tallow Balm
Whipped Balm is a 120g jar with a soft, airy texture. Its complete listed formula is beef tallow, olive fruit oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba seed oil and honey.
Apply a small amount with fingertips to freshly cleansed and toned face, neck and décolleté, avoiding direct eye contact, as directed on its label. Explore Whipped Tallow Balm, 120g.
For a firm balm: Solid Tallow Balm
Solid Balm comes in 60g and 120g jars. Its complete listed formula is tallow, olive fruit oil, beeswax and honey. Warm a small amount between your fingertips, then gently massage into clean, dry skin, focusing on the face, neck and décolleté and avoiding the eyes.
The 60g label advises against use during pregnancy. Read the full directions and precautions when you choose your Solid Tallow Balm size. For a closer look at the two balm recipes, visit our whipped-versus-solid comparison.

A straightforward cleanse-and-moisturize routine
- Cleanse with water. Lather the soap, apply to skin and rinse thoroughly. Use a gentle touch and pat dry rather than scrubbing. Keep soap away from the eyes.
- Follow with your chosen moisturizer. If you choose a MODII balm, follow its individual directions above. Solid Balm specifies clean, dry skin; Whipped Balm specifies freshly cleansed and toned skin.
- Start small. Begin with a small amount of balm so you can judge the feel before adding more. Introduce one new product at a time to make changes in your skin easier to notice.
- Put each product away with care. Let the soap dry on a draining surface. Use clean hands for balm, close the lid after use and keep water out of the jar. Store products in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and out of children’s reach.
Moisturizing after washing can be a useful part of everyday care. The American Academy of Dermatology includes it in its general dry-skin guidance. Always follow your chosen product’s own directions.
A few questions before you choose
Can I leave tallow soap on like a balm?
Rinse the soap off thoroughly after cleansing. Its directions call for rinse-off use. Choose a leave-on moisturizer for the next step.
Do I need both products?
Choose what your routine needs. If you already have a cleanser you enjoy, you can explore a balm on its own. If you prefer bar cleansing, start with the soap and continue with a moisturizer that suits you.
